Petition for divorce filed by Pennsylvania's attorney general

It's been a difficult year for Kathleen Kane, Pennsylvania's attorney general, both professionally and financially. An investigation into an email port scandal on government computers resulted in dozens of employees being disciplined. In addition, a Pennsylvania State Court justice resigned, in which she had a rather large role.

In another probe into lawmakers that reportedly accepted inappropriate gifts, Kane put an end to it. She received a lot of criticism for that and the investigation was later started again by Seth Williams, who is Philadelphia's district attorney.

Another investigation currently underway concerns whether secrecy laws were violated by Kane's office by providing information to a local newspaper.

Now, Kane has filed for divorce from her husband of 14 years, with whom she has two sons. Her marriage, according to her filing, is irreparably broken. Her spokeswoman has asked that the media give the family privacy.

Divorce is a difficult time for anyone, but for those who are in the public eye, it can seem as though every court paper and comment is under a microscope. It's in these cases that a strong, experienced family law attorney is needed to ensure that your rights are not violated -- even if you are just a layperson. Understanding what is at stake is important, including child custody, child support, property division and alimony. These are major issues that require a deft hand and experience in court.

Before you make any agreements with your spouse about your divorce, make sure you seek out legal advice to ensure your rights and the rights of your children are protected.
