Is your divorce just a failure?

On Behalf of | Oct 30, 2015 | Divorce |

You’ve probably heard people say it: My marriage failed. There is this idea that getting a divorce is just a failure, as if it is something everyone should avoid. Is this really the best way to think about it, especially if you’re moving toward divorce yourself?

Experts warn not to adopt this mentality. No one should feel obligated to stay in a relationship where he or she is unhappy or even unsafe, these experts say, meaning that it’s not a failure to get out.

Some experts even note that people don’t always think of marriage in traditional terms anymore, meaning that “until death do us part” may not carry as much weight as it once did. Divorce is common and relatively easy. As such, these people think of a marriage as a long-term relationship, but one that may still have an end date. It just means that two people are going to be together for the foreseeable future, not that they’ll be together forever.

Of course, these things are relatively subjective, and the way that you view marriage and divorce could be very different. However, it is interesting to note that the universal way that marriage has been looked at in the past may no longer hold true for everyone. In this light, divorce is just a realistic part of modern marriage, and not some sort of failure.

Plus, when you factor in things like domestic violence and abuse, there’s no question that divorce is better than staying in the relationship.

If you’re going to get divorced in Pennsylvania, look into all of the necessary legal steps as soon as you can, and make sure you have the right mindset.
