How is the amount of child support set in Pennsylvania?

| Feb 6, 2015 | Child Support |

Establishing child support can be complicated in Pennsylvania, especially if there are other matters to decide as well such as child custody or property division. However, for the person paying the child support and the person receiving it, it’s important that all income and expenses are included.

The Pennsylvania Support Guideline is used by the courts to establish the amount of child support. The goal of the guideline is to ensure that the children of parents who are separated will get the same amount of incomes from their parents as if they were still married or together. Incomes are used to determine support but so are any unusual expenses. Adjustments to child support are allowed for health care or insurance, childcare, summer camps, private school and more.

If the mother or father disagrees with the court’s order for the amount of child support, an appeal may be filed. That appeal must be filed with the domestic relations section, and it must be done within 20 days.

A petition for a modification of child support may be filed if there is a substantial change in one or both parents financial circumstances.

Child support must be paid until the child is 18 years old; however, if he or she is still attending high school, the support order may still be in effect.

At the Family Legal Center, LLC, we understand how complex this subject can be. We represent parents who want to ensure that the amount of child support is fair, but also is set according to established laws. To learn more about child support in Pennsylvania, please visit our webpage.
