Establishing paternity is essential for a father's rights

Do you believe that you are the father a child, but the mother won't allow you to have any contact? In these types of child custody cases, you can work within the court system to establish paternity and seek visitation or custody.

One way that paternity can be established in Pennsylvania is through an Acknowledgement of Paternity form. If the mother and father were not married, but the mother has named you as the father, you can acknowledge that you are the parent in writing. The court will not need any further action to establish an order for support.

Another way to establish paternity is through genetic testing. The test results must find "a 99 percent or higher probability of paternity" before the court will find that the father is the defendant. Parents who do not appear at scheduled court hearings in a paternity action could find a ruling handed down by the court that is not in their favor. Should you not appear for the test, the court will find that you are the father.

Some paternity cases can be complex. At the Family Legal Center, LLC, we understand how difficult these cases can be. We work to help fathers understand their rights. We know the impact that a dispute of paternity can have on their lives -- and that includes financial obligations, such as child support, and visitation and custody.
