Tips for keeping the cost of your divorce down

Not only does divorce take a high emotional and mental toll, but the financial toll can be very high. For many divorcing couples, finances led to the divorce anyway. Dealing with them further can truly bring about a feeling of helplessness. However, when it comes to the actual cost of a divorce, there are ways to keep the fees from draining every bit of money you have. Here are some of the most important tips:

-- Don't fight over every single item in your home. One attorney recalled a client who brought in "junk" to list as "mine." Some of the items included shop towels, dish rages and even a scrubber for cleaning pots and pans. Use your head and fight over the things that truly matter, such as child custody, child support, alimony and retirement accounts.

-- Avoid calling your attorney over the simplest of things. Because attorneys usually charge for each 15 minutes, it's important to only phone your attorney when necessary. Otherwise, you're likely to receive an invoice several pages long with each phone call listed.

-- Keep all correspondence from your attorney. Asking for copies could cost you in added fees. In addition, inquire about communication via email. It's much less time-consuming and costly.

-- Avoid using your attorney as a therapist. It can get quite expensive and attorneys are generally not therapists. Your insurance plan may provide this coverage anyway.

These are just a few of the tips that can help you save money on your divorce. There are simply too many other considerations during this difficult time that must be dealt with to spend money when you don't have to.
